About

Welcome to our blog for Box Turtle Farm in North Alabama.

Born and raised in southern Alabama (think: red clay roads and nice folks) and educated for many long years at Auburn University (CVM class of 2000), I consider anything farther north than zone 7- just plain too cold. I am a compulsive typer, author of biological thrillers – E. M. Mitchem, and stay-at-home veterinarian mom to two amazing humanoid creatures. I would never call myself a “gardener” – that would be an insult to gardeners – but I love to experiment with what plants can survive my care (I’m more of an animal person). And frankly, we have a surplus of compostable material produced by our horses and two house rabbits. I hate to see perfectly good waste wasted, and my two kids need lots of manual labor – (or they are just about intolerable. That’s normal, right?) So… we… GARDEN. And let me be perfectly clear- This is NO STRESS gardening, folks. I believe learning to be flexible, and problem solve- AND sustainably grow some food is an important part of a well-rounded upbringing. It’s a nice goal, anyway. “The best laid plans of mice and mothers . . . .”

2019 update: The last couple of years, I’ve been blessed to have a wonderful gardening/life partner who enjoys driving a tractor – so things have been getting serious on the farm. 🙂

Looking forward to updating you guys on what has transpired on the “plot” since 2015 and what’s to come in 2020!
